VILLA PRETZ

CONVERSION OF THE ATTIC

The architects Clemens Holzmeister and Luis Trenker built the "Ansitz von Pretz" in Bolzano in 1926.

Although Holzmeister was never a modern, or rather, never just a modern architect, the Villa von Pretz is the first modern building in Bolzano. The people of Bolzano called the villa the "desert station".

1956

the villa was extended. On the third floor, the narrow façade element was extended to a full storey. Holzmeister was again commissioned to do this. A dignified hipped roof over a plaster coving, as on the nearby Gerstburg, soothed the building and the feelings of the people of Bolzano.

2011

we were commissioned to restore the second half of the roof storey. We soon saw it as an opportunity to free the house from its Gerstburg imitation and bring it back a little closer to the original Holzmeister. We built a new narrow façade element out of the existing roof volume, set off with a terrace and with different plaster, and behind it we built a flat monopitch roof, which is pierced by a faux fenewall again, so that rainwater can run off through shallow arches.
